St. Kitts Agriculture Official Visits NIU to Strengthen Bee Conservation Cooperation
Office of International Affairs
August 24, 2025

Mr. Monroe Tweed, an official from the Department of Agriculture, St. Kitts, visited National Ilan University’s (NIU) Wujie Experimental Apiary and Wild Bee Conservation Base. He was welcomed by Professor Yuh-Wen Chen, Distinguished Chair Professor of the Department of Biotechnology and Animal Science. The visit focused on exchanges in bee restoration, ecological conservation, and bee disease prevention, highlighting Taiwan’s strengths in agricultural technology and biodiversity conservation.

Professor Chen has devoted years to bee restoration and disease prevention. In collaboration with the ASE Environmental Sustainability Foundation, he established two bee conservation bases in northern Taiwan. The first, located in Pinglin, New Taipei City, works with renowned beekeeper and wild bee advocate Mr. Hung-Sung Cheng to restore Eastern honey bees and promote sustainable habitat management. The second, at NIU’s Dajiaoxi Forest, serves as a combined teaching and research site.

The NIU team not only restores wild bee populations but also monitors bee health and environmental conditions. Their research includes investigations of Sacbrood Virus (AcSBV), a major disease affecting Eastern honey bees, and the development of antiviral materials to protect wild bee populations and support ecological stability.

Dr. Tweed commended NIU’s achievements in bee conservation, noting that the visit deepened his understanding of Taiwan’s agricultural technology and opened opportunities for future collaboration in bee conservation, disease prevention, and sustainability. Professor Chen added that NIU will continue to integrate academic, industrial, and international resources to advance biodiversity research and promote sustainable conservation with a global perspective.
